Mastering the Art of a Wood Fireplace

Avoid Overfiring
Overfiring occurs when the fire in the fireplace reaches excessively high temperatures, surpassing the manufacturer’s recommended limits. Overfiring can lead to several issues, including damage to the fireplace components and increased risk of chimney fires. Here’s how to prevent overfiring:
a. Use Properly Seasoned Wood: Burn only well-seasoned hardwoods, as they burn cleaner and produce less creosote buildup. Avoid burning green or wet wood, which can lead to low-temperature fires and incomplete combustion.
b. Follow Manufacturer’s Guidelines: Refer to your fireplace manufacturer’s guidelines for recommended burn times, temperature limits, and air control settings. Following these specifications ensures that you operate the fireplace within its intended range, preventing overfiring.
c. Use a Thermometer: Install a magnetic thermometer on the flue pipe or stovepipe of your wood fireplace. This allows you to monitor the temperature and make adjustments to prevent overfiring. Keep the temperature within the recommended range provided by the manufacturer. You can reduce the risk of overfilling by ensuring not to put too much wood into the fireplace, this will ensure there is adequate airflow within the appliance; in turn making it easier to clean!
Avoid Overfilling
Overfilling the firebox with an excessive amount of wood can lead to several issues, including poor airflow, incomplete combustion, and increased risk of sparks and embers escaping. Follow these tips to avoid overfilling:
a. Follow the One-Third Rule: Fill the firebox to only about one-third of its capacity. This ensures proper airflow around the wood, allowing for efficient combustion and heat production. Avoid stacking wood too high or pushing it against the glass doors.
b. Use Properly Sized Logs: Choose logs that are of the right size for your fireplace. Opt for split logs that are approximately 3-6 inches in diameter and 16-18 inches in length. Using properly sized logs helps maintain proper airflow and prevents overloading the firebox.
c. Use a Fireplace Grate: Using the cast iron fireplace grate inside the firebox elevates the wood off the floor, allowing for better airflow and combustion. The grate also facilitates ash management and makes cleaning easier. Make sure not to load wood onto any firebrick surface!
Cleaning
Regular cleaning of your wood fireplace is essential to maintain its performance and ensure a safe and efficient operation. Here’s how to clean different parts of your wood fireplace:
a. Firebox and Interior: Remove ashes and debris from the firebox regularly using a fireplace shovel or vacuum specifically designed for ash. Dispose of the ashes in a metal container and store it outside away from flammable materials. Use a stiff brush or scrub pad to clean the firebox walls if necessary. Avoid using water, as it can cause rust and damage to the fireplace components.
b. Exterior: Clean the exterior surfaces of the fireplace with lukewarm water. Use a soft cloth or sponge to gently scrub away any dirt or grime. Rinse with clean water and dry thoroughly.
c. Glass: Wait for the fireplace to cool completely before cleaning the glass. Use a specialised fireplace glass cleaner (we recommend Ruco Wood Fireplace Glass Cleaner) or lukewarm water. Spray the solution on the glass and let it sit for a few minutes to loosen the soot. Scrunch up some newspaper and spray lightly with water, then dip the paper into some loose ash (ensure there are no large pieces of coal as this can scratch the glass). Gently scrub the glass with the newspaper in circular motions, starting from the top, then wipe clean with a dry cloth or paper towel. Continue this until the glass is completely clean. Avoid using harsh chemicals or abrasive materials that can scratch or damage the glass.

Royd Clan’s Autonomous House x Sculpt Fireplace Collection
Both off-the-grid and autonomous, this striking family farmhouse near Geelong in Victoria connects its occupants with nature and each other.
When the owners first bought – sight unseen – the 89-acre farm on which their home now sits, the rolling hills were covered in noxious boxthorn weed and the original stone farmhouse was in ruins.
With the help of Landcare, they set about clearing the invasive spiny shrubs and planted 2500 native trees in their place. Regenerating the land was important for homeowners Cam and Sally, who had both grown up in the country.
“I remember planting trees with my mother when I was a kid, and I just loved that you could create nature and a reserve over time and watch it grow; I’ve always loved that,” says Cam, an agricultural scientist.
He and Sally set aside 30 acres to do just that. “It’s been awesome watching the spotted gums grow, and actually quite quickly, really. It doesn’t take that long to change the landscape,” says Cam.
Inspirational project
When it came time to design a house for the farm, they turned to an architect they’d worked with before on a house in North Melbourne: Nadine Samaha from level architekture>konstrukt.
Drawing inspiration from the ruins, boulders and mythology of the picturesque property overlooking the Barrabool Hills near Geelong, Nadine got creative in designing an autonomous, off-the-grid home. The five pavilions making up the home emulate the boulders on the site, the clustered design welcoming natural light and cross-ventilation into all of them.
“It really integrates well with the land,” says Nadine. “With its shimmering cladding reflecting the trunks of the surrounding gum trees, it almost vanishes into the landscape.”
Nadine is passionate about creating spaces and forms that seamlessly connect with the natural world and support wellbeing. An advocate of biophilic design, Nadine mentors graduate architects, teaches Environmental Sustainable Design at RMIT, and chairs the Australian Institute of Architects’ Sustainable Architecture Forum – when she’s not designing incredible houses, that is.

What is an outdoor air kit?
Outdoor air kits is an optional extra for many wood heaters such as the Sculpt Seguin range that brings a continuous stream of fresh air from outside directly to your inbuilt OR freestanding wood heater.
Whilst an outdoor air kit is not always required for every build, they are highly recommended. This is because newly built houses these days are often under much stricter energy and insulation regulations meaning houses are being built to almost airtight conditions. To overcome this, outdoor air kits are becoming a regular solution by making use of fresh air from outside your house in the combustion of a fire as opposed to the ambient air from inside the room. As these kits directly connect the fireplace to outside, fireplaces using this technology operate in a closed circuit.
To answer to those new requirements, a large range of Seguin stoves and fireboxes offer the possibility to not use the ambient air of the room for the combustion. The appliances directly take the fresh air from the outside, through a sheath directly connected to the outside or a double-flow flue.
What are the advantages?
If you’re building a 6 star and above home, but want the warmth and ambience of a woodfire, an outdoor air kit is encouraged. By taking in air from outside and not the room, this will result in a warmer home. Outdoor air kits also ensure that your wood burning heater receives sufficient air for the unit to work to its best ability.

The Local Project x Park View House
A home previously bearing the name the ‘ugly duckling’ was transformed and lovingly re-named “Parkview House” after 8 months of hard work.
The original plans were to renovate the circa 1950’s Art Deco home, however the owners and designer of this Thornbury, VIC home quickly discovered that the house was originally build with weatherboard. Adding to the drama, the facade was bricked over with an extremely questionable backyard extension, so the team pivoted and decided to work with an architect, an interior designer and a builder collaboratively, to design a new home which would look like it was never out of place!
Owners worked alongside Elevate Building Group to complete this stunning transformation project; James Hardie Linear Cement Sheeting was used instead of timber for the weatherboard cladding, installing a Delos 3-stage Whole Home Water Filtration System that filters all water coming into the home, installing a Tesla Wall Car Charger, double glazing throughout with skylights through our bathrooms. Design was completed with the amazing work from Shaynna Blaze and Allie Harris, alongside Build Her Collective; an empowering online course for women about home renovating, design and styling!
The use of lots of natural light in the hallway and open plan kitchen/living/dining area made it the perfect place to feature the Sculpt Fireplace Collection Seguin Axis i1000 Freestanding Single Sided fireplace.
